ADD and ADHD have become so commonplace these days that we rarely talk critically about either diagnosis anymore.  Odds are that either you or someone you know has recently talked casually about someone being “ADD,” or you may have joked about your own ADD regularly preventing you from accomplishing things in life.  In fact, we talk about ADD as though its the modern day common cold, and scrutinize the diagnosis with about the same of thought (meaning we don’t). If you are a parent I want you to think back to your childhood for a moment and all the fun you had running, playing, and learning about the world around you. Think about how exciting it was laughing, goofing around, and just being a kid. Think about the thrills you had being spontaneous, creative, and trying new things on a daily basis. Sadly, kids today who display the behaviors I just mentioned are now quickly labeled “ADHD,” and most are immediately drugged with psychostimulant drugs to curtail their activity level and transform them into passive, compliant “kids” who more resemble adults than anything else. Attitude is a major variable when it comes to athletic (and life) success.  This week I discuss the importance of attitude, and remind coaches and parents to in turn teach kids that attitude is also 100% under our control — so choose wisely! Remember, by developing a positive attitude motivation, focus, and resiliency also improve, as does the collective attitude of the entire team.  When we feel good, we also tend to build off our small successes while letting our mistakes go without beating ourselves up over coming up short.  Developing a positive attitude does a lot of great things, and the best part is that we get to choose every day the type of attitude we want to promote …
