When we see a youngster excelling in a sport, it’s understandable that we would also assume that he or she loves playing that sport. In some cases that’s true, but in other instances the athlete may be pretty talented at a sport but not love — or even like — playing that sport. When kids continue to play a sport they don’t like, the pressure they experience can lead to frustration, anxiety, burnout, and even depression — all important reasons why parents and coaches should tune in to the level of interest kids having in playing sports.
