Eminem needs attention, so what does he do? The same thing as everyone else does these days — he does the most outlandish and craziest thing he could think of — he acted like a fool on live television. Similar to Miley Cyrus at the VMA’s just a few weeks ago, today’s “celebrities” have come to learn that the only stuff that sticks around in the news anymore are things that push the envelope to the nth degree. For Miley Cyrus, she all but had sex with Robin Thicke on stage, and for Eminem (a guy who seems to have been pushed to the background on today’s youth audience) he had to do something that would make him interesting and intriguing, right?? Enter ABC College Football Game of the Week with Brent Musberger and Kirk Herbstreit.
Regardless of whether Eminem was drunk, high, or just faking being “out of it” (my personal pick by the way), he certainly knew going into the interview that he would have the world as his stage. He probably also figured that a tame, innocuous interview consisting only of simple answers about his new music wouldn’t do much for his popularity, ratings, or future record sales. So what does he do? The only thing you can do these days in order to steal a few minutes of the national spotlight — act like such a fool that it forces everyone to talk about it.
Today’s news doesn’t give much a platform for normal, feel good stories. Instead, the only “news” that sticks around more than a minute is the sensational stuff — since it’s all about clicks, ratings, and drawing an audience big enough to sell advertising, this seems to be the only way to do it (sigh).
In today’s world everyone has a webpage, blog, forum, internet radio station, etc, etc, etc. It is for this reason that grabbing national and world attention requires so much more than simply giving a normal interview or performing a song without taking off your clothes and sexually grinding on people. In the case of Eminem last night, he chose to give inappropriate blank stares, bizarre meaningless answers, and an overall appearance of simply being out of it. Great. As the world stood still, held hostage by the interview sandwiched between halves of the Michigan – Notre Dame football game, we all got to watch Eminem act like a dolt for ratings.
And so you will buy his new album.
