Tattoos can be seen everywhere these days, ranging from famous athletes and entertainers, to the teachers who instruct our kids at school. Why the tattoo craze took off like it did these last 10-15 years is anyone’s guess, and with seemingly everyone inked up these days it begs the question: Why do those who choose to remain tattoo-less not follow the trend of everyone else? Look around today and you will see men and women, young and old, tatted up — and increasingly more often in taboo places of the past, including the hands, neck, and face. Take a quick count of those around you and you will soon see it is the tattoo-less person that is really hard to find these days — and, ironically, the ones who are actually getting the most attention as a result.

Why people do not get tattoos
I actually happen to know a few people who have chosen to not get a tattoo, and I asked about the reasons why they have avoided getting inked. Below are the reasons given:
- Permanence feels too permanent. One person said to me “What if I change my mind? I already hate the hair cut I recently got, but at least my hair will grow back in — there are no do-overs when it comes to tattoos.”
- They don’t want to follow a trend. “Everyone has one. Why should I?” What once felt bold and expressive now feels expected — almost cliché. For some, not having a tattoo is the new act of nonconformity.
- They associate it with attention-seeking. “What’s the statement? What are you trying to prove?”
Even tasteful or meaningful tattoos are, to some, a kind of self-promotion. For people who value privacy, mystery, or subtlety, going tattoo-free feels more authentic. - They don’t like the aesthetic. “Ink just doesn’t look good to me.” Some people simply prefer clean, untattooed skin — visually or stylistically. Tattoos can clash with personal or professional vibes they want to maintain.
- Career or professional reasons. While less true today, there are still professions or environments where visible tattoos can affect perception, credibility, or dress code.
Tattoos used to be a mark of rebellion, individualism, or bold self-expression. But is that still the case today? When everyone is expressing themselves through tattoos, they can start to blur together, so in a twist, not having tattoos can feel more unusual — more noticeable — especially in certain circles. It suggests restraint, mystery, or non-participation in the aesthetic arms race. People who once got tattoos to be seen might now fade into the background, while someone without a single drop of ink may spark curiosity and prompt the question: “No tattoos? Really? Why not?”

Final thoughts
What a person decides to do with their body is certainly their choice, but it is interesting to watch society “tip” from being largely tattoo-less, to today where it seems like literally everyone has a visible tattoo. As trends become mainstream, it is not uncommon to see people change their views on what is and isn’t cool anymore, and this applies to tattoos. As more people without tattoos are given attention for their independent thinking, we may continue to see a reverse-trend where it is actually cooler to be tatt-free than it is to have a tattoo.
